What is Music Therapy?

Music therapy is a evidence-based allied health profession in which music is used to actively support people as they aim to improve their health, functioning and well-being.

Some of the areas music therapy helps people improve their wellbeing include:

  • Social skills
  • Communication
  • Emotional wellbeing and development
  • Cognitive skills
  • Physical skills and Coordination

Music therapy incorporates a range of activities, including:

  • playing musical instruments
  • drumming
  • singing
  • improvising
  • movement exercise and dance
  • song-writing
  • learning music skills and songs
  • listening to music
  • musical social games, and many more!

Music therapy is for everyone, and the best part is - you don't have to have played music before to participate!

While music is the main tool used in music therapy, it is not about being "good" or "skilled" at music. Music is used as a vehicle to improve health and wellbeing, and most importantly, to have fun!
